Ohio Export Assistance Network

Fueling Growth Through Global Trade

Ohio on the Global Stage: Leading the Way in U.S. Exports

More than 95 percent of the world’s population and two-thirds of global purchasing power are located outside America’s borders. However, less than 1 percent of the 30 million businesses in the U.S. engage in exporting. While small and medium-sized companies make up nearly 97 percent of U.S. exporters, they contribute to only about 20 percent of the total export value of U.S. goods.

Exporting enables companies to diversify their portfolios and withstand fluctuations in the domestic economy. Moreover, for every $1 billion in U.S. exports, approximately 5,279 jobs are created or supported in the manufacturing sector (Source: U.S. Commercial Service).

Ohio ranks as the ninth-largest exporting state in the U.S. and consistently is among the top 10 exporting states nationwide. The leading export industries in Ohio include machinery, vehicles, aircraft, electrical machinery, plastics, and oilseeds.
